Daisy Moon Was Born This Way

Puberty Blues for the Gaga Generation

Daisy Moon has no interest in fitting in, and would prefer to stand out. Way out. So far out you’d think she lived in outer space.

Bright eyed and eccentric 14-year-old Daisy Moon is president and founder of the Little Monsters Club for Misfits (a play on Lady Gaga’s fan club for those not in the know), where she holds her club meetings inside the dusty beachside bus stop on her front lawn. She’s the club’s only member.

Her 17-year-old brother Noah couldn’t be more different. An elite athlete on the cusp of cracking national competitions, his world falls apart when he’s caught cheating on a time trial. They both dream big and they’re both stuck in a world too small. Set in a coastal town, this play draws on Australian iconography of the faded beachside surf club, but turns it on its head by drenching it with pop-culture and contemporary teen attitude.

Q Theatre is thrilled to bring you this brand-new play by up and coming writing talent Emily Sheehan. Emily completed her Masters in Playwriting at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2015 and the same year, her first play, Hell’s Canyon, won the 2015 Rodney Seaborn Award, was shortlisted for the 2016 Patrick White Award and was showcased in Playwriting Australia’s 2016 National Play Festival at the Malthouse Theatre.

Nick Atkins, the play’s Director, says “Emily’s work takes characters or ‘voices’ that are often treated as flippant, and gives them a real strength, and points out that obsession with pop culture isn’t just a silly phase we should be dismissing – but celebrating.”

Daisy Moon Was Born This Way will be comedic, kooky and will draw on elements of magic realism. Fuelled by the awkward and ferocious energy that is teenage hormones this new Australian play is a coming of age dramatic comedy about making mistakes and learning to love yourself anyway.

Featuring Isabelle Ford as Daisy; Ayeesha Ash as Parker, who tries to befriend Daisy; Andre Drysdale as Noah, Daisy’s brother and Mansoor Noor as Jimmy, written by Emily Sheehan and directed by Nick Atkins.
