Q Theatre has been making work for more than 50 years. Based at The Joan, Penrith we offer audiences a chance to see theatre that has been provoked, inspired or exploded out of our local context. We build pathways for established and early career artists to train, experiment and create.
You can catch us through our Production, Independent or Workshop Programs.
Production - New Work
We make shows.
Whether you’re audience, artist or somewhere in between, we hope you can connect with Long Table, The Ugliest Duckling or Bathory Begins across 2019. If you have questions regarding our Production program or would like to pitch a project of your own please email Director, New Work, Nick Atkins. You can check out what’s on over here.
Workshop - For Learning
Workshop Production: Annual Youth Theatre Festival, Originate
Designed for artists aged 16–26 our Workshop Productions are here to help you learn how to make work, meet collaborators and take the next steps on your creative journey.
Courses: Studio Q
Running across four terms, our Studio Q weekly classes offer aspiring artists aged 5–18 the chance to connect with industry mentors and learn what it means to be a performing artist. You might be an actor, circus artist, director, writer or still figuring out. Studio Q is a fun, supportive and safe place to explore. For any questions about Q Theatre’s Workshop activities including enrolments please email Theatre Programs Coordinator, Ian Zammit.
Independent - Residencies, Seasons, Opportunities
Residencies: Q Theatre Lab
Across 2019 Q Theatre will lead an Artist in Residence program which allocates financial support as well as studio space for independent artists to develop new ideas. Our main round of residencies is completed across January and February but keep an eye out for development opportunities across the year.
Seasons: Q Indie
Following the success of our inaugural Q Indie season in partnership with Sydney Fringe, Q Theatre will continue to support four projects across the year to present a season of new work. EOIs will be available throughout the year.
Southlands Breakthrough Award
Delivered by Q Theatre, and supported by Southlands, the Breakthrough Award offers financial assistance and mentoring for the development of new projects by early career artists.
For more information about our Independent program please email Associate Producer, Emele Ugavule
The Q Story
From providing lunchtime theatre at Circular Quay in the 1960s, to our current home in The Joan, Q Theatre’s extensive and radical work over the past fifty odd years is hugely significant in Australia’s theatrical history and holds a vital place right at the heart of creative Penrith.
